Biography of Jeff Bezos
Jeff Bezos controls not only the online retailer Amazon, but also several other companies - and is more than successful with it. Because the billionaire is a genius as written in books.
A clever mind
Bezos loved to tinker as a child, took apart his crib as a toddler, and was also particularly interested in science and technology subjects at school. During high school in Miami, where Jeff's family settled after elementary school, he attended courses at the University of Florida and worked on his own little inventions, Like a lightning alarm to keep your siblings away from your room. A true high achiever in high school, Bezos naturally continued on his road to success after graduation. He studied computer science and electrical power engineering at the renowned Princeton University and graduated with not one but two bachelor's degrees and, of course, honors. There was nothing in the way of a successful career.
The breakthrough as an entrepreneur
But Bezos himself could only dream of the extent that this should take on. Although he worked for various sought-after companies immediately after university, he finally left his secure job in 1994 when he suspected how successful this invention called "Internet" could become.
Incidentally, on a drive from New York to Seattle, Bezos developed the business plan for Amazon and eventually started the company in his garage. The entrepreneur was in the right place at the right time with the right idea - and later raked in billions as an Amazon founder.
But of course that wasn't enough for Jeff: When the world became too small for him, he decided to conquer space as well. As early as 2000, Bezos founded the start-up "Blue Origin", which was supposed to deal with possible trips into space and the development of hotels or amusement parks on other planets. It could still be a while before the first tourists are really shot into space, but Jeff Bezos's message has gotten through: The earth is just not enough for him!
The entrepreneur made a terrestrial investment in 2013: he bought the daily newspaper " The Washington Post " for a mere 250 million US dollars.
Expensive divorce
Jeff Bezos proved early on that he has a good nose for business ideas - he invested in Google back in 1998 - and that is paying off today: his fortune is said to be around 200 billion US dollars.
Money that his ex-wife MacKenzie is sure to be happy about by now. The two met in the early 90s when she was still working for him. They got married in 1993 and today the couple has four children. In early 2019, the couple announced their split via Twitter, and it became one of the costliest divorces of all time.
In the past, Jeff Bezos hasn't exactly been known for his generosity. He hardly supports charitable organizations: Although he occasionally donated larger sums, he is considered anything but generous compared to his billionaire colleagues. Nonetheless, after the divorce, a significant sum of his fortune went to his ex-wife MacKenzie. He himself keeps the majority of the shares and the newspaper "The Washington Post", but she receives an Amazon share package worth almost 40 billion dollars, now holds four percent of the company and is the fourth richest woman in the world.
But unlike her ex-husband, MacKenzie wants to donate half of her fortune. And in the end both sound quite forgiving. The former couple wrote on Twitter: "We have lived together as a married couple and we also see an amazing future as a parent, friends and partners in business and plans."
The extortion scandal
There was no nasty public war of roses, but Jeff Bezos can also be combative. So in February 2019 when he defended himself against an attempted blackmail. The National Enquirer reportedly threatened to publish intimate private photos if he didn't stop investigating how private text messages about himself and an extramarital affair with Lauren Sanchez got to the magazine.
New plans for Jeff Bezos
At the beginning of 2021 it was probably time for a change of scenery. Jeff Bezos announced that he will step down as CEO of Amazon in the third quarter of 2021 and instead take over as executive chair of the board of directors. This decision gives him more time and freedom to focus on his other projects, such as the Washington Post and his space start-up Blue Origin. There's a lot going on at Bezos - we're curious to see how the multi-billionaire will continue.
