Early childhood

Gautam Shantallal Adani was born on June 24, 1962, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Currently, she is 60 years old. He is the son of Shantal and Shanti Adani. His father was a modest textile trader. Its nationality is Indian.


Gautam Adhani has seven siblings, of which Rajesh Shantilal Adani, Vinod Adani,  Vasant S. Adani and Mahasokh Adani are his brothers. His parents left the city of Tharad in northern Gujarat.

He was educated at Sheth Chimanlal Nagindas Vidyalaya in Ahmedabad. Later, he enrolled in the University of Gujarat to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce, but left after the second year.

Career and professional life

Adani moved to Mumbai in 1978 when still young to work as a diamond sorter for Mahendra Brothers. His older brother Mahasukhbhai Adani bought a plastics factory in Ahmedabad in 1981 and asked him to oversee operations. This business eventually served as Adani's entry point into international trade via polyvinyl chloride (PVC) imports.

It began importing commodity polymers for small businesses in 1985. Adani established Adani Exports in 1988, the holding company of the Adani Group, now known as Adani Enterprises. The company initially traded agricultural and energy-related products.

When economic liberalization policies proved beneficial to his business in 1991, he began to expand into trading metals, textiles and agricultural products. Additionally, the Gujarati government announced the outsourcing of the management of Mundra Port in 1994, and Adani won the contract in 1995.

Adani created Adani Power in 1996. It is the largest private thermal electricity producer in the country. It has thermal power plants with a combined capacity of 4620 MW.

Philanthropy

Gautam is the chairman of the Adani Foundation, funded by the Adani Group. Hence, it was founded in 1996. Moreover, apart from Gujarat, the Foundation operates in the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

Similarly, in March 2020, he donated ₹100 crore (US$13 million) to the PM Cares Fund through his group's philanthropic arm, to fight the coronavirus outbreak. A contribution of ₹5 crore (US$630,000) was made to the Gujarat CM Relief Fund and ₹1 crore (US$130,000) to the Maharashtra CM Relief Fund.

Additionally, diversified conglomerate Adani Group, led by Adani, imported four ISO cryogenic tanks filled with 80 metric tons of liquid medical oxygen from Dammam in Saudi Arabia to Mundra in Gujarat. The group also obtained 5,000 cylinders of medical grade oxygen from Linde Saudi Arabia. In a Twitter post, Adani shared that every day his group provides 1,500 medical oxygen cylinders wherever needed in Kutch district of Gujarat.
